At most coffee shops you can stay as long as you like, provided you keep being a customer and you give the table back when the place fills up. At ours the answer is shorter. Buy a coffee and the desk is yours for the day.
Nobody posts the rules, which is why people worry about them. So here is the unwritten version, from the side of the counter that notices.
Why it is a fair question
A coffee shop sells coffee, but what it really has to offer is the seat. A laptop that stays four hours on one drip coffee is sitting in a chair somebody else might have bought lunch in. Most owners do not mind laptops at all. What worries them is a full room where nobody is buying anything.
So the question is less “how long” and more “how much of the room, and at what time of day”. Two hours at a quiet table in the middle of the afternoon is nothing. Two hours at a four-seat table through the lunch rush is a different thing, even on the same coffee.
The unwritten rules at most places
These are not ours in particular. They are what most shop staff would say if you asked them honestly.
- Buy something when you arrive. Then buy something again every couple of hours if you are staying.
- If you are there over lunch, eat there. Unwrapping a sandwich from home at a cafe table is the one thing nearly every owner minds.
- Watch the room at busy times. When it fills up, move to a smaller table, share, or take the moment to go for a walk.
- One person, one seat. A four-seat table is for four people when the room is full.
- Calls go quietly, with headphones. Keep them short, or take them outside.
- Take your things with you. A laptop left to hold a table for an hour is holding somebody else’s seat.
None of that is a time limit. It is a way of staying that keeps you welcome.
How it works here
Our shared workspace is a different arrangement from a cafe table. It is a separate room with full-size desks and proper chairs, set up for people who are staying. There is no day rate and no membership, and there is nothing to book. Buy a coffee and the desk is yours for the day. Nobody is going to come and ask whether you have finished.
There is power at nearly every seat and the WiFi handles video calls, so you are not rationing your battery or taking calls sitting in your car.
We ask two things in return. If you are settling in for the day, get a coffee, because buying something is how the room stays free. And please do not bring outside food or drink in. The whole menu is served all day, so you will not be stuck at lunchtime.
Is it rude to work at a coffee shop all day?
Not if the shop is set up for it and you are a customer while you are there. It becomes rude when the shop is plainly short of seats and you are holding one without buying anything, or when your calls are the loudest thing in the room.
If you are not sure what a particular place thinks, ask at the counter. Staff will usually tell you straight, and asking is itself the thing that makes you a welcome regular rather than a problem.
Being the regular they are glad to see
Most of this is ordinary courtesy. Clear your cups when you leave. Learn the names of the people behind the counter. Keep your bag off the seat next to you when the room is filling. Tip if the shop takes tips and you have been there all morning.
The regulars staff are pleased to see are not always the ones who spend the most. They are the ones who treat the room as somebody’s place of work, because it is.
