A free place to get a day's work done

Our shared workspace is open during opening hours. No booking, no day rate, nothing to join. Buy a coffee and the desk is yours for the day, with real desks, fast WiFi and power where you need it.

Open every day, 8am to 5pm · 1110 W Southern Ave, #8, Mesa, AZ 85210

The Beanchain workspace: two long rows of desks with green office chairs, monitors and plants.

Why it is free

Because charging for a chair is a strange way to run a coffee shop

Plenty of places will sell you a desk by the day. We would rather sell you a coffee and let the desk be the reason you came. It means students, freelancers, people between jobs and anyone whose home is not a workable office all get the same room.

That is not a marketing position. It follows from how the business is run: this is a worker directed shop, and the people doing the work decided the room should be open.

What you get

It costs nothing

No day rate, no membership, nothing to apply for. Walk in during opening hours, buy a coffee, and the desk is yours for the day.

Power at nearly every seat

Bring the laptop and the charger. You are not going to spend the afternoon hunting for an outlet.

Fast, free WiFi

Ask at the counter for the password. Video calls are fine.

Printing

There is a printer in the workspace. Ask at the counter and someone will sort you out.

Real desks

Full-size desks and proper chairs in a dedicated room, not a wobbly cafe table by the door.

Coffee and lunch on site

The whole menu all day, plus a cooler and cup ramen for when a work session should not be interrupted by finding food.

A library and a shelf of board games

Walls of donated books to read while you are here, and games in the coffee table for when the work is done.

Booking it out

Need the room to yourself?

Everyday working needs no reservation. If you want the space for a group, a class or an event, that is a booking, and it runs through our Peerspace listing so the calendar and the payment are handled in one place.

For a meeting that wants a door and a screen instead, the conference room is bookable by the hour.

The workspace door, framed by a wall of green foliage with a hand-lettered beanchain workspace sign.

The library

Every book here was given to us by somebody who could say why they liked it

The lounge: a leather chesterfield and armchairs in front of full bookshelves, under a painted quote.

The shelves run on donations, with one condition. Tell us why you like the book. Not a review, just a reason. If there is not one, we would rather you kept it.

It is a small rule and it does all the work. It is the difference between a shelf of things somebody cared about and a shelf of whatever was being cleared out of a garage.

We ask that the books stay here. Read one over a whole afternoon if you want to, then leave it for the next person who wants it.

There is also a community book on the shelf that anyone can add to. People write in it, draw in it, and contribute however they feel like contributing. Nobody edits it and nobody curates it, which is the point.

Before you come

Can I work from Beanchain all day?
Yes. The shared workspace is free and open during opening hours, with no day rate, no membership and nothing to book. Buy a coffee and the desk is yours for the day. We built the room for people who need somewhere to get a full day done.
Do I have to pay to use the workspace?
No. There is no charge for the workspace, no day rate and nothing to join. We are a coffee shop, and buying something is how the room stays free, so if you are settling in for the day, get a coffee.
Is the WiFi free, and are there power outlets?
The WiFi is free and there is power at nearly every seat. Ask at the counter for the network password. Bringing a laptop and a charger and staying a while is the intended use, not an inconvenience.
Can I bring my own food and drink?
We ask that you do not bring outside food or drink in. The counter is what pays for the room being free, so a coffee is the deal. The whole menu is served all day, and there is a cooler and cup ramen if you want something quick.
Can I print something?
Yes, there is printing available in the workspace. Ask at the counter and someone will sort you out.
Do I need a reservation for the shared workspace?
Not for everyday working. Reservations are only for booking the space for an event or a group, which you can do through our Peerspace listing.
